Program Description:

The Mary Witt Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 in memory of Mary Witt, who was killed in a car accident several months after participating in a Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) customized program to Central America. The Center attached the fund to Mary’s name because of her inspiring commitment to a more inclusive, just and peaceful world. The money in this small fund enhances opportunities for persons lacking sufficient personal resources, especially persons of color, to participate in Center for Global Education and Experience customized programs and meet their counterparts in other countries who are working for social change. Due to the limited size of the fund of about $4,000/year and the many requests we receive, we are currently targeting scholarships to individual persons of color, particularly those who are involved in grassroots community engagement. The award is based upon financial need.

Award Amount:  The award amount is typically between $300-$600. The amount of the scholarship provided will depend on the applicant’s financial need and the resources available to the Center for Global Education and Experience. Final decision regarding the awarding of funds rests with the Center for Global Education and Experience at Augsburg University.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • This is a financial need-based scholarship. Applicant should be able to document financial need, student status alone will not be sufficient documentation.
  • Demonstrates a commitment towards social justice, social change, and grassroots community engagement.
  • Must be traveling on a Center for Global Education and Experience short-term customized programs to one of our permanent sites in:  Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Cuba, South Africa, Namibia, or any CGEE custom program with a strong social justice focus. (This scholarship does not apply to CGEE Semester Abroad Programs.)
