The Thomas Global Leaders Scholarship Fund

Through the generous gift by Jill and Bob Thomas, this fund empowers the next generation of Augsburg global citizens. The Thomas Global Leaders Scholarship Fund provides vital financial support for students pursuing life-changing international education and experiential learning programs through Augsburg University’s Center for Global Education and Experience.

This scholarship helps remove financial barriers so that passionate students can step beyond borders, immerse themselves in new perspectives, and bring transformative insights back home.

Award Details:

• Full room and board coverage scholarships will be awarded to a limited number of Augsburg students.
• Additional scholarship awards will be available in the form of discounted room and board, airfare to/from the program, and additional costs as available.  

Eligible Programs:

• All Augsburg CGEE Semester programs for Spring 2027, Fall 2027, and Spring 2028. These programs are:
  • AFRICA
    • Decolonizing the Mind: Racial and Environmental Justice in Namibia & South Africa
  • EUROPE
    • Conflict, Peace, and Transition in Northern Ireland (internship program)
    • Social Systems, Sustainability, and Justice in Norway
  • LATIN AMERICA
    • Liberal Arts, Migration and Social Change in Mexico
    • New Activisms, Human Rights and Social Justice in Guatemala & Costa Rica
    • Social Work in a Latin American Context in Mexico

How to Apply (Augsburg Students):

Step 1: Open a study abroad application for one of the programs listed above.
Step 2: Complete the questionnaire and short essay inside of the program application labeled "Optional Scholarship Opportunity."
Step 3: Complete and submit your study abroad application before the deadline to be considered for an award.

What We Look For in an Application Essay (Augsburg Students):

In your application essay, we invite you to share your story by addressing three key areas:

• Financial Need and Access: Explain how receiving this scholarship will directly impact your financial situation and help make your global program possible.
• Purpose & Growth: Share what you hope to gain personally, academically, and professionally from your time abroad.
• Community Impact: Describe how you plan to use the knowledge, skills, and global perspective you acquire abroad to benefit and enrich your community back home upon your return.

​​​​While financial need is one component of this award process, we welcome students of all financial need levels to apply!

Timeline & Dates:

• For Spring 2027 awards: priority deadline to apply: October 15, 2026, commit to your program by Nov. 1, 2026
• For Fall 2027 awards: priority deadline to apply: March 15, 2027, commit to your program by April 1, 2027
• For Spring 2028 awards: priority deadline: October 15, 2027, commit to your program by Nov. 1, 2027

You will be notified of your award status before you are asked to commit to the program. 

All Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, and funding awards are first-come, first-serve. Apply soon!
