Located in Southeast Minnesota, Fillmore County was an early destination for Euro-American settlement following the United States' 1851 treaties with the Dakota nations. In the 1970's Amish people came to Minnesota from Wayne County, Ohio, where they were becoming over-populated. Today, Fillmore County is the hub of Minnesota's Amish Country. Amish settlements tend to be remote from large population centers. This distance, and the availability of farmland, has continued to steadily attract Amish settlers over the past few decades.
