Finance Information for Auggies Studying Abroad

Students may apply their full financial aid package to the cost of semester or year-long off-campus study and there are different scholarship options available. The cost of off-campus study is comparable to attending Augsburg’s campuses in Minneapolis and Rochester. In fact, studying for a semester at one of the Augsburg CGEE Study Centers (in Mexico, Central America, or Southern Africa) is often less expensive than studying, living, and eating on campus! Most students pay the same tuition as if they were on campus; room, board, and travel costs vary depending on program and location.

While study abroad on a semester program at our Study Centers can be very affordable, there are other programs available that are more expensive. Be sure to take into account the location, the currency exchange rate, and the cost of living in the area. For a more specific breakdown of costs that are unique to your student and their program, check out their cost estimate form that is generated once a student starts an application.

Tips: Staying in Touch with your Student While Abroad!
Whether your student is a seasoned traveler or it is their first time away from home, we understand the needs and concerns of families to have regular contact with them while they are abroad. We encourage students to think about their plans for keeping up contact with friends and family back home during their time abroad, and how to do this in a way that is beneficial for all involved. We recommend that students allocate a small amount of time each week to call or skype home and maintain contact otherwise through intermittent text messages or email. While it is important for students to have support from back home while they adjust to their new lives abroad, we emphasize the importance of giving students the opportunity to settle into their new environment and adapt without the constant contact of home.

If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s study abroad program, feel free to contact our offices via abroad@augsburg.edu, or 612-330-1656. Please understand that we are not authorized to release any information about the student or their particular study abroad plans.
